"The Communion before the Communion"
Numbers 28:6: “It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord."
Devotional:
As bible scholars, we are very aware of the importance of proper grammar and the usage of literacy devices that the reader can use to cross reference material from one section to the other. Today we will break down those literacy devices within Numbers 28:6. The communion is when believers symbolically eat and drink of the flesh and blood of Christ as a ‘Continual” reminder of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus in which we closely exam our unworthiness of it and how it is an act of love and grace.
We will cross examine the scripture in four parts. “It is a continual burnt offering” The offering had to be continual because it was a representation of Christ’s flesh before the Lord and how we are to die to our flesh daily. Peter teaches us in 1 Peter 2:21, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps”.
Now we move our attention to “Which was ordained in Mount Sinai.” God had designated the sacrifices to be in specific areas so that they can be approved in His eyes. It could not have been in someone's tent, but specifically on that mountain. If we go back into the New Testament, the Jews wanted to kill Christ in many locations, however, it had to be on that Calvary hill at that “ordained” time. As we delve deeper, we see the phrase “For a sweet savour.” The word “for” describes the reason for the clause it is placed before. That clause being “a sweet savour.” In the natural world, we know that something that is sweet brings pleasure to our taste buds, that we often savour them and the memory of that moment for an extended period. That is why we often refer to sweets as a form of a delicacy. However, in the spiritual, we can see a play on words, the word “savour ” can be seen as “savior.” According to Ephesians 5:2, “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.“ God lets us know in Ephesians that what He did back in Numbers was all due to the love that is manifested through His son.
Finally, we see “A sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord.” Here again the Lord uses John the Baptist as a forecaster in Matthew 3:11, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: But he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” Now we see that it is only by fire that any sacrifice is truly worthy to God, and that is the true cleansing. We can now conclude the importance of breaking down the word of God and cross-referencing the importance that it offers to us as a believer of God’s record of keeping His word.
Prayer:
Lord, Father God in the name of Jesus, I come to You humbly with a sincere heart full of gratitude to share Your word with the saints. That they may know the importance of the sacrifice of Jesus and how it purifies down to the inner core of our beings. We thank You Lord for divine revelation in Jesus’ name, Amen.
